My First Challenge with The Daring Bakers’ August 31, 2008

In the middle of July I found this group called The Daring Bakers’, and I was completely intrigued by this group. One member or group of members is chosen each month to pick out the challenge for that month. They have done some awesome recipes and I knew that I needed to be a part of the group. I missed the July challenge which bummed me out because I wanted to start with the group as soon as possible. So I waited and finally at the beginning of August I got the official invited. I went to the forum to see what this months challenge was and a breathed a sigh of relief. The challenge was chosen by Tony Tahhan and MeetaK. They chose Chocolate Éclairs from Dorie Greenspan’s book Chocolate Desserts By Pierre Hermé. (more…)

So far this whole Vegan Adventure is going pretty smoothly. I have liked everything and haven’t had any mishaps. There is a lot of stuff that is coming in the next week that I LOVED.

Today’s Vegan Adventure is Black Bean, Mushroom, and Quinoa Stuffed Peppers. My first thought when I saw this recipe was, “What the hell is quinoa?” I really have never heard of it before and had no idea what it was. Come to find out it is a complete protein. Alright, way to go quinoa. I had no idea what it looked like either so when I was in the grocery store looking for it I thought I would never find it in the organic section. Then finally the clouds parted, the clerk moved out of the way, and there it was 🙂 . (more…)

I just realized that I forgot to do one of the steps in the recipe. Chopping the dried shiitake mushrooms after they cooked in the vegetable broth. No wonder they were a little chewy in regular size form. Hey, I didn’t mind it but my other omni friend didn’t like the fact that they were a little chewy and were very woodsy tasting. Funny thing is that is what I liked about them. When he said that all I could think was, “Well mushrooms are suppose to be woodsy.” (more…)

This weeks Tuesday with Dorie…

Drum Roll Please….

was chosen by Amy of Food, Family and Fun. She chose Dorie’s Chocolate Banded Ice Cream Torte located on pages 288-289 in Baking:From My Home to Yours. Just looking at the picture in the books makes me want to dig in. It is so beautiful. I only hope that mine will look even remotely close. The entire week I have been contemplating making the entire recipe or halving it and making mini ice cream tortes. I think I am just going to bite the bullet and make the entire recipe 🙂 .

Vegan Adventure #4: Cause Green Tea Cupcakes are Slutty August 25, 2008

As soon as I saw these cupcakes, I knew that I had to make them. My first encounter with matcha was when Starbucks had the Blackberry Green Tea Cream Frappaccino. But I stopped getting those because of the calories and started to get an iced non fat green tea latte. It was only on special days because there are days were I love matcha and days were it just reminds me of fish. I have no idea why. My friend Fro and I used to always drink them and everyone thought we were nuts. They were yummy. But I think I might have matchad myself out because now I have to crave it to want it and I don’t go to Starbucks anymore (personal preference). (more…)

The Vegan Adventure continues with Chickpea and Spinach Curry. I wasn’t too intrigued by this recipe when I first read it through. Until I went to The Post Punk Kitchen’s Flickr page and saw a picture that someone took when they made this recipe. It looked SO GOOD that I knew that I had to make it.

The only problem that I had with this recipe was trying to find asafoetida (hing powder). Fizzle was right when he said that it is hard to find. Since it was only optional, I gave up and did not use it. The curry turned out great. I have never had a real curry or gone to an India restaurant or anything to get curry. My usually curry consists of me buying a jar of curry paste and making something close to the recipe on the back of the jar. It usually involves 1 chopped onion, 1 can diced tomatoes, curry paste, chicken, and hot cooked rice. Yes, chicken….remember I am not vegan I only play one on TV. Wait, I mean I am just experimenting right now.

Corn Chowder

Or in my kitchen, I randomly yell CHHOOWWWWDDDAAAAARRRRR!!!!

Because I am that weird

I made this for my first real vegan recipe because I have about 7 ears of corn in my fridge that my mom gave me when she was in town. I guess her neighbor came over and was growing sweet corn on part of his farm and just brought a bunch over. I have had it in my fridge for about a week and it was time to use it 🙂 . (more…)
